Magic: The Gathering will be visiting plenty of new worlds in the coming years—and plenty of non-Magic worlds will be visiting thanks to the Universes Beyond line of products. Jurassic Park, Fallout, Assassin’s Creed, and Final Fantasy are all coming to Magic in various forms over the next few years.
Don’t miss our coverage of the other announcements made at Gen Con: Pioneer is coming to MTG Arena alongside Pioneer Masters, the Angel-themed Secret Lair Commander deck, plus Magic’s 2024 (!), 2025 (!!), and 2026 (!!!) sets were revealed.
Let’s tackle them in chronological order of release.
Jurassic Park
In a not-so-surprising twist, our return to Magic’s dinosaur plane in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan will feature Jurassic Park crossover cards! (Technically Jurassic World, but just let me have this one.)
The Jurassic World cards will be “booster inserts” similar to the Transformers cards that were included in The Brothers’ War. This means that you will be able to find them in both The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Set and Collector boosters. There will also be two Secret Lair drops.
This collaboration will feature mechanically unique cards with iconic characters and moments “spanning across many feature-length films.”
The Lost Caverns of Ixalan and its Set and Collector boosters will release in November 2023, while there is no date known for the Secret Lair drops.
The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, Holiday Edition
Also coming in November 2023 is an update to The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth. The holiday release will include a “handful” of new mechanically unique cards, new scenes, and new treatments.
One of the new scenes is “The Might of Galadriel,” which will include some of those mechanically unique cards. It will be one of the many “scene boxes,” which are special boxes that include a full set of borderless scene cards with a classic foil finish.
We also got to see one of the new treatments that will be available in the holiday Collector Boosters: Sauron, Dark Lord.
Fallout
Next up will be a collaboration between Magic and the post-nuclear apocalypse video game series Fallout. This product will feature four Commander decks, each representing one of the game’s factions (similar to the Warhammer 40k Universes Beyond Commander decks), and will be released in March 2024.
Assassin’s Creed
Coming in July 2024 is a crossover with one of the biggest video game franchises: Assassin’s Creed. Wizards says that “every Assassin’s Creed game gets in on the fun.”
This Universes Beyond product will be the first “Beyond Booster,” a new booster type that isn’t draftable. Instead, the booster is intended to be an experience and “take you on a journey unique to that universe.” The cards in each Beyond Booster will be a mix of new cards—which will be Modern-legal—and reprints.
Final Fantasy
Saving the biggest announcement for last, Wizards revealed that the hotly anticipated Magic and Final Fantasy collaboration will be released in 2025 and that it will be a “tentpole” booster release similar to The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth. It will feature each main Final Fantasy game, from the original to Final Fantasy XVI, and will be available on Arena.
