Universes Beyond has brought some of the most ridiculously cool sets I’ve ever seen. Franchises from all over have gotten their time to shine, and I’ve been so excited for the people who are fans of said franchises. With so many more on the way, I can’t wait to see what they have in store.
There are a lot of IPs that have been a huge part of my life growing up. Some of them were fleeting, and some of them stay with me to this day. Many of them probably will never make it to print for many reasons, but if Final Fantasy can make it, I think we have a shot at a few of the ones on my wish list.
- Guilty Gear: One of the most successful fighting game franchises around, Guilty Gear is chock full of characters, lore surrounding each one, and games to pick mechanics from. You could make an entire block out of this series, and while it would be in direct competition with the Street Fighter Secret Lair, it could carve its own place in Magic history.
- Kingdom Hearts: This one is pretty damn tough, because there’s a lot of intertwining IPs at play, between Square Enix and Disney. The latter probably wouldn’t play along well at all, but one could dream. The franchise gets talked about a lot, and often for reasons that aren’t particularly exclusive to it, but the world, characters, and more notably, the liberties one could take in bringing these into card form, are boundless. I would love to see what the people over at WotC could do with a platform like this.
- Warframe: The decade old MMOFPS has a dedicated playerbase. The dozens upon dozens of Frames alone could make an entire set, and that doesn’t include the many ships and planets you could feasibly explore and put into card form. A space-themed set would also just be plain cool to navigate, as I don’t believe one has been done to my knowledge.
- Avatar: Honestly, I just want to see how awesome the characters would be and what they could do on a card. I would love to see just how cool Aang and Korra would be. Avatar is already a creature type, the colors are already there for each character, and the themes and settings play themselves! Obviously nothing is a shoo-in, as game design is hard, but if there’s one set I want to see the most, it’s this one. The reprints would fit themselves here too! Each nation would neatly be represented! It almost makes me want to mock up what this set would look like, but I’ll leave that up to the ones that do it for a living and are much better at it than I.
Universes Beyond is one of the most fun sets to release in quite some time. You’ll never hear the end of it from me when The Final Fantasy set is released. Having a hobby of yours get incorporated into another hobby you enjoy is such a wonderful feeling, and I hope more people get to enjoy crossovers for their interests!
