It can be a bit daunting at times to know what to purchase when it comes with any Magic: The Gathering product nowadays. Thankfully, Commander Masters is a little more straightforward than other releases (looking at you Tales of Middle-earth)—but only a little.
Packs from Commander Masters are semi-seeded, meaning that certain slots will only include certain types of cards. Wizards of the Coast is doing this because Commander Masters is a Limited-based Commander product, designed from the ground up for players to build mini-Commander decks from only a few packs.
All the Variants to Collect
One of the special cards players can find in these packs are Borderless Profile legendary creatures. These cards depict a stylized side-view of some of Magic’s greatest legendary creatures. There are 24 cards receiving this variant and can be found in every pack.
The classic Borderless cards are back in Commander Masters, highlighting some powerful reprints coming in the set with brand-new and visually impressive artwork. There’s a total of 46 borderless cards to collect, 12 commons, 13 uncommons, 18 rares, and 3 mythic rares.
Coming back for Commander Masters are Etched Foil and the even more impressive Textured Foil cards. These cards have a special foiling treatment to make them stand out against other traditional foil cards. Each of the 135 rares and 35 Mythic Rares have a Foil-Etched version and are only found in Collector Boosters. The Textured Foils are even rarer, only appearing on 10 cards, the nine Borderless Profile mythic rares as well as the Jeweled Lotus.
The rarest type of card coming in Commander Masters are Frame Break card. These cards feature artwork that is bursting out of the card, overlapping text boxes and making it look like the card is escaping the card itself. There are only 12 cards receiving this type of treatment but are incredibly rare.
The last type of variant players can collect are Extended-Art cards. These cards are only available in Collector Boosters and are all cards from the Commander Masters Commander pre-constructed decks. Keep in mind that Sagas and Planeswalkers cannot be extended art cards, so only 35 of the 40 pre-constructed decks exclusive cards are given this treatment.
