The air is unbelievably muggy here in New York City and that can mean only one thing—the Secret Lair Summer Superdrop is here! The Superdrop features seven separate drops, ranging from The Lord of the Rings to Goblins to Mountain Goats, and will be available starting today until August 28, 2023. The drops are estimated to ship on August 29, 2023.
More Adventures in Middle-earth
First up is a drop that features four new cards from Magic’s latest set, The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth. The art is from the 1978 The Lord of the Rings animated movie animated by Ralph Bakshi and adorns four cards:
The drop will cost $40 in foil, $30 in non-foil.
Death Is Temporary, Metal Is Forever
The meta-flavor is strong with the “Death Is Temporary, Metal Is Forever” drop. The cards in the drop appear to be based on a poem authored by Nekusar, the Mindrazer himself about Nekusar, the Mindrazer, which describes the two characters meeting in battle:
“Waste Not” by the Nekusar, the Mindrazer
Syr Konrad, the Grim rode into war,
Upon a steed of shadow and pain.
The inhuman horde fell to his sword,
The ghasts and the ghouls had been slain.
But when the Mindrazer joined the fray,
Syr Konrad was unseated and fell.
Bound to the Wheel of Misfortune,
And slowly dragged into hell.
Five cards are included in the drop, all with art by Mark Riddick:
The drop will cost $40 in foil, $30 in non-foil.
Goblin & Squabblin’
“Goblin & Squabblin'” features five of the cutest goblins you’ve ever seen—definitely on the same level as “From Cute to Brute.”
All five goblins in the drop are illustrated by Wizard of Barge:
The drop will cost $40 in foil, $30 in non-foil.
Bad to the Bones
If you like skeletons driving hot rods and riding motorcycles, then “Bad to the Bones” has got you covered.
Ryan Quickfall illustrated five cards with badass skeletons doing driving like bats skeletons out of hell:
The drop will cost $40 in foil, $30 in non-foil.
Artist Series: Ryan Alexander Lee
Ryan Alexander Lee has illustrated over 50 cards for Magic and chose five cards to illustrate for his very own Artist Series drop. The card choices, and their art, were “inspired by the liner notes in an old heavy metal album” and “show a hero charged by the gods to do battle with a colossus in the shadowlands beyond the known world.”
The drop will cost $40 in foil, $30 in non-foil.
The Stars Gaze Back
Yu Maeda illustrated four Elementals in “The Stars Gaze Back”:
The drop will cost $40 in foil, $30 in non-foil.
Featuring: the Mountain Goats
John Darnielle, the primary musician behind the Mountain Goats, is a huge Magic: The Gathering fan. He was given the opportunity to design this Secret Lair drop and chose to set the lands in Lorwyn. He then “created the art descriptions, hand selected the artists, and reviewed the art as it was being produced,” then “penned the epic prophecy featured in the flavor text across these 10 cards.”
The drop will contains 10 basic mountains and will cost $40 in foil, $30 in non-foil.
