Wizards didn’t reveal much when they announced that Magic would cross over with Lord of the Rings and Warhammer 40k in two upcoming Universes Beyond products. Well, as part of today’s mega news drop, we finally have some sense of what these will look like!
Don’t miss our coverage of today’s other news: all four of 2022’s Standard sets, all four of 2022’s supplemental sets, Street Fighter and Fortnite Secret Lair drops, and the Out of Time Superdrop.
Warhammer 40k
The Warhammer 40k crossover will be made up of four Commander decks that will feature new art, brand new cards, and powerful reprints—all set in the dystopian 40k universe. These decks will be available in 2022 from any retailer that currently carries preconstructed Commander decks.
No cards were previewed, but Wizards did reveal two pieces of art from the product, both of which feature Ultramarines, the most popular chapter of the Space Marines, one of the many playable armies in Warhammer 40k.
Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth
The Lord of the Rings crossover will be much more expansive and make up an entire set, called Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth, as well as four Commander decks and an unknown number of Secret Lair drops.
The set will feature all the characters you’d expect from a Lord of the Rings set, from Gandalf, Friend of the Shire (the art for which you can see above) to Gollum to Frodo. It will be coming to Magic Online and Magic Arena in addition to tabletop and will be legal in Modern as well as eternal formats, which isn’t standard for Universes Beyond products.
Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth will be released in 2023.
