Today, Wizards of the Coast announced that Amonkhet Remastered will be released on MTG Arena on August 13, 2020.
Amonkhet Remastered will combine the two sets that made up the Amonkhet block, Amonkhet (released in April 2017) and Hour of Devastation (July 2017), into a single “remastered” set designed for Limited play. “Expect Amonkhet Remastered to bring the set-defining cards and iconic mechanics you remember from both Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation,” Wizards said, “but with updated gameplay to make this a fun and fresh experience for all of our players.”
Combined, both sets contained 459 unique, non-basic land cards; Amonkhet Remastered will pare that number down to 340 cards to form a draftable set that will also support Historic as well as Pioneer’s eventual addition to MTG Arena.
It’s unclear why Wizards decided against releasing the full Amonkhet and Hour of Devastation sets on MTG Arena and instead chose to create a “remastered” set. Both sets were fully implemented in MTG Arena’s Closed Beta but were removed from the game when it transitioned to its Open Beta in the Fall of 2018.
