Today on Weekly MTG, Wizards of the Coast revealed Sundered Bond by Django Wexler, the ebook that will accompany Magic: the Gathering’s next expansion set Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths. It will be released on April 7, 2020 for $3.99 and is available for preorder on Amazon.
Wizards also showed off the cover of Sundered Bond, which features art of an unnamed character with Vivien Reid in the background. We’ll learn more about this new character on April 2 as Ikoria previews begin.
READ: Ikoria’s tabletop release date was delayed until May 15 for most of the world.
This announcement follows an early Amazon listing that leaked a few days ago, revealing that the ebook would retail at $3.99 and release on April 7, 2020. The listing turned out to be accurate and the Sundered Bond ebook is now available to preorder.
Django Wexler joined Blake Rasmussen and Steve Sunu on Weekly MTG today to talk about Sundered Bond. He spoke of some of the challenges of writing new content in a preexisting framework and that he enjoyed the research and development involved in “bridging” his content into the wider Magic multiverse. This project size “[fell] into a nice sweet spot” in his schedule and Wizards strongly implied that Wexler was working on more Magic fiction.
Sundered Bond will be Wexler’s second Magic novel, following 2019’s The Gathering Storm, a story set during War of the Spark that was serialized in a months-long email campaign (archived for access here). It was generally well received by the community, especially in comparison to the controversy surrounding the two other War of the Spark novels by Greg Weisman.
Wexler is a longtime Magic fan and has played the game since 1997. Outside of Magic, he is widely recognized for his work on the “flintlock fantasy” books The Shadow Campaigns.
