Today, Wizards of the Coast announced a new un-product, Unsanctioned, a box set with five 30-card un-decks, one for each of Magic’s five colors. Unsanctioned will release on Leap Day, February 29, 2020.
On Weekly MTG, Gavin Verhey, Senior Magic Designer at Wizards of the Coast, said that Unsanctioned is intended to be played by two players who each take two of the mono-colored decks and shuffle them together, creating two 60-card, two-color decks.
Verhey also said that Unsanctioned will have a “wrestling match kind of flavor.”
Unsanctioned will contain 16 new un-cards and plenty of un-reprints, as well as 10 new lands (a foil and non-foil of each basic land) with what Verhey called a “super cool treatment” that will be revealed at a later date.
The box will also come with two six-sided dice and 10 double-sided tokens. It will be available worldwide in English at local game stores, mass market stores, and online stores on February 29, 2020.
Unsanctioned is the fourth official un-product, following three un-sets designed Magic’s Head Designer by Mark Rosewater: Unglued, Unhinged, and Unstable. Un-sets are known for their irreverent and humorous cards that have silver borders, meaning that they aren’t tournament legal, as well as their alternate-frame basic lands. 2017’s Unstable, for example, had full-art borderless lands painted by John Avon.
