Mythic Championship V may be the first major event to feature Throne of Eldraine Standard, but the full deck lists show a remarkable consensus has already formed: Bant Golos is the best deck, and ramp is the best archetype.
With that in mind, here are the Top 10 Standard cards for Mythic Championship V. A note about our ranks and statistics: The rankings in this article were derived through the xRank algorithm on Thousand Leagues, which looks at a card’s presence in the metagame, how many copies are played, and a little special sauce.
For each card, the “Percent of Decks Pre-MCV” metric refers to the percentage of Standard decks included the card in tournaments before Mythic Championship V, while “Copies per Deck Pre-MCV” shows on average how many copies of the card were contained in each of those decks. “Copies in MCV Decks” shows how many total copies of the card were registered in decks for Mythic Championship V and how that number ranks (excluding lands).
1. Once Upon a Time
Percent of Decks Pre-MCV: 48.5%
Copies per Deck Pre-MCV: 3.4
Copies in MCV Decks: 171 (1st)
The breakout card of the new Standard format and Mythic Championship V is Once Upon a Time. It is by far the most played card both leading up to the tournament (nearly 50% of the overall metagame plays the card) and was registered in over 70% of decks at the Mythic Championship.
The card combines a mechanic that has led to many broken cards in Magic’s history—being able to cast it for free, at least sometimes—with the ability to find either a land so you don’t stall on mana or creature so you don’t flood out, making it an obvious inclusion in any Green deck.
2. Hydroid Krasis
Percent of Decks Pre-MCV: 36.2%
Copies per Deck Pre-MCV: 3.5
Copies in MCV Decks: 162 (2nd)
Everyone’s favorite Jellyfish Hydra Beast, Hydroid Krasis, comes in at a comfortable second place due to its inclusion in nearly 70% of decks at Mythic Championship V. It is most powerful ramp payoff—by far—as it is a nearly unbeatable combination of a huge, flying trampler with life gain and card draw.
3. Teferi, Time Raveler
Percent of Decks Pre-MCV: 33.6%
Copies per Deck Pre-MCV: 3.7
Copies in MCV Decks: 89 (10th)
Teferi, Time Raveler, or T3feri to his friends, is one of the most powerful Planeswalkers printed in recent memory. He isn’t as popular at Mythic Championship V as xRank would have predicted, falling to the 10th most-played card rather than the predicted third, but don’t sleep on just how difficult it is to beat a Turn 3 Teferi.
4. Murderous Rider
Percent of Decks Pre-MCV: 28.2%
Copies per Deck Pre-MCV: 3.5
Copies in MCV Decks: 24 (not ranked)
Murderous Rider is the card whose representation at Mythic Championship V is farthest from its power level. An instant-speed removal spell for creatures or Planeswalkers stapled on to a reasonable creature is an insane card—but, unfortunately, it appears that Magic pros don’t believe that a Black-based deck can compete with Golos, Tireless Pilgrim and Field of the Dead, dropping the Golgari Adventure deck from 28% of the metagame to just 9% of the field at the Mythic Championship.
5. Growth Spiral
Percent of Decks Pre-MCV: 23.6%
Copies per Deck Pre-MCV: 4
Copies in MCV Decks: 138 (3rd)
6. Circuitous Route
Percent of Decks Pre-MCV: 21.9%
Copies per Deck Pre-MCV: 3.9
Copies in MCV Decks: 115 (5th)
With 70% of the Mythic Championship V field being of the ramp archetype, it’s no surprise that two of the most effective ramp spells in Standard are so highly ranked.
I would be remiss not to include this tweet that perfectly encapsulates the new Standard metagame.
7. Golos, Tireless Pilgrim
Percent of Decks Pre-MCV: 21.3%
Copies per Deck Pre-MCV: 3.9
Copies in MCV Decks: 114 (6th)
Wait, the current bogey man of Standard is only the #7 card in Standard? Well, not even Golos, Tireless Pilgrim can overcome the dominance of Green ramp in Standard (seven of the Top 10 cards are Green).
8. Gilded Goose
Percent of Decks Pre-MCV: 19.3%
Copies per Deck Pre-MCV: 3.9
Copies in MCV Decks: 76 (not ranked)
The Golden—sorry, Gilded Goose just barely fell out of the most-played card rankings for Mythic Championship V but is arguably one of the most important cards in the ramp archetypes. It requires a bit more of a Food subtheme, though, which means Oko, Thief of Crowns becomes more important.
9. Questing Beast
Percent of Decks Pre-MCV: 21.3%
Copies per Deck: 3.4
Copies in MCV Decks: 103 (7th)
The keyword soup that is Questing Beast adds up to an extremely powerful and efficient card. It’s the four-drop of choice for Green decks and Green decks are the default choice for Mythic Championship V, pushing it to be the seventh-most played card at the event.
10. Oko, Thief of Crowns
Percent of Decks Pre-MCV: 19.9%
Copies per Deck Pre-MCV: 3.6
Copies in MCV Decks: 98 (9th)
Oko is likely the most underrated card on this list in terms of its rank and the number of copies played in Mythic Championship V. A three-mana planeswalker with two (2!) powerful plus abilities adds up to a very potent card and it’s likely that the only thing keeping Oko, Thief of Crowns from being the most powerful card in Standard is the dynamic duo of Golos, Tireless Pilgrim and Field of the Dead.
