On Sunday, September 22, 2019, the original painting for Josh Hass’s Murderous Rider was sold on the MTG Art Market for a death-defying $5,000!
Murderous Rider by Josh Hass is a traditional work of oil on wood board with cradled supports, measuring 16 inches by 20 inches. It is one of the new storybook-frame Adventure creatures for Magic’s newest set, Throne of Eldraine. It is the “regular” version of this card, appearing alongside Jenn Ravenna’s Showcase Variant Murderous Rider.
The auction was run on the MTG Art Market with Vorthos Mike acting as agent for the artist for the first time. A bidding war began almost immediately, pushing this piece to an unexpected $3,600 by the end of the first day. The bids continued to climb as action resumed the next morning between a handful of different collectors public and private. A $5,000 public bid won the day and took the piece home for a collector, making this one of the most exciting auctions to watch this preview season and an exciting accomplishment for art and artist.
Hass usually works digitally for his Magic illustrations, and this is one of very few traditional works for Magic by the artist. However, the considerable interest and bidding will almost assuredly be a nudge to create more traditional pieces in the future. This is a wonderful painting, and we can only hope to see more from him, maybe even traditional pieces, in upcoming sets.
