On Sunday August 18th, 2019, the original painting for the Exodus legend Mirri, Cat Warrior was sold on the MTG Art Market for $10,500.
Mirri, Cat Warrior by Daren Bader is a work of oil on board, measuring 9 inches by 10 inches and currently framed slightly larger. She is a member of the original Weatherlight crew and has been seen on a variety of cards throughout Magic’s history.
This was her earliest and original depiction by legendary Magic artist Daren Bader, dating back to 1998 when the game was just five years old.
The auction was run on the MTG Art Market by Kouji Kobayashi on behalf of current owner Nick Detwiler. Several weeks ago, Detwiler posted that he may be selling some of his collection with his own post on the MTG Art Market to gauge interest, and the interest in many of his pieces was considerable. The first piece sold from his collection was Squee, Goblin Nabob, selling for an incredible $18,500 on the MTG Art Market one week earlier.
This auction began a bit slower, but soon began jumping by thousands and the hundreds: opening at $2K, then to $7K, $7500, $8000, $8500, and $9000. At the beginning of the last day the painting sat at $9200, and would remain there until one more private advance of $10,500 would be entered and win the work.
It remains to be seen how much more of Detwiler’s collection will come to public auction, or what may be sold privately instead. Some of Magic’s most important paintings are under one roof and you won’t want to miss it, so stay tuned to Hipster’s of the Coast’s Art Market Minute for updates!
