After a weekend full of Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis decks, Thoralf Severin won Mythic Championship IV Barcelona with Tron. He defeated Alvaro Fernandez Torres, who played Hardened Scales Affinity, 3-1 in the finals.

Don’t miss our coverage of Day 1 and Day 2 of Mythic Championship IV.

Severin breezed through two Jund decks, in the hands of David Mines and Zhiyang Zhang, to make it to the finals. Tron traditionally has a very good matchup against Jund. Severin defeated Mines 3-0 and Zhang 3-1.

On the other side of the bracket, Fernandez Torres defeated the Hogaak Vine deck that was the story of the weekend in the hands of Martin Müller, 3-2. He then beat Sean Gifford and his Eldrazi Tron 3-1. Hardened Scales Affinity is thought to have a favored matchup against the various flavors of Tron because Tron traditionally doesn’t play a lot of disruption, making Arcbound Ravager and Inkmoth Nexus kills easier to pull off.

Fernandez Torres advanced to the finals to face what looked like another favorable matchup in Severin’s Tron deck. But Severin quickly overpowered Fernandez Torres in the first two games. Fernandez Torres mulliganed to five in Game 3 and looked to be in trouble, facing down turn three Tron from Severin yet again. But Fernandez Torres led with Hardened Scales into multiple Walking Ballistas and Arbound Ravagers, while Severin only found one threat to dump all of his mana into, allowing Fernandez Torres to win the game.

In an ultra-close Game 4, Severin had to play a Forest early and cast two copies of Sylvan Scrying to assemble Tron. That allowed Fernandez Torres to get ahead off Hardened Scales and a modular army. Blinkmoth Nexus provided an out to Severin’s Oblivion Stone, but it ended up dealing 15 flying damage with Severin at 16 life—one point short of forcing Game 5. Severin then drew a second Urza’s Tower, cast Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger exiling the Nexus and another land. That left Fernandez Torres with only single copies of Forest and Hardened Scales on board. Needing to draw land and Walking Ballista over two turns to deal the final point of damage, Fernandez Torres found only a handshake on top of his deck.
