The Team Modern Super League continues today at 9 PM Eastern (GMT -4) on twitch.tv/magic.
Welcome back to Team Modern Super League 2! Week 8 features the Scary Pterrys vs Stream Team. The Scary Pterrys are Emma Handy, Autumn Burchett, and Chantelle Campbell, who is taking over for Meghan Wolff this week, while the Stream Team is made up of Jess Estephan, April King, and MTGNerdGirl. Both teams are 0-1 and are fighting to stay alive for the quarterfinals at 1-1, with the loser getting eliminated at 0-2.
Scary Pterrys Decklists
The Scary Pterrys have brought an assortment of decks: Dredge, Hogaak Reborn, Jund, Snowshift, and NeoBrand.
Dredge
We haven’t seen much Dredge much of late because Hogaak and friends were a better “Dredge” deck, but the Prized Amalgam have found its way back into sleeves. This deck didn’t change much since the last two sets but trimming on a Prized Amalgam makes room for another resilient threat in Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis.

Jund
Jund is always the crowd favorite just because of how fair the deck is but it’s a good choice. As of late we’ve seen Seasoned Pyromancer in the three-drop card advantage slot, but the Scary Pterrys have two Chandra, Acolyte of Flame to test out. It acts like a mini Legion Warboss that is able to flashback key removal spells when needed. With the other zero ability being able to “ramp” red planeswalkers it can get a fast Wrenn and Six emblem to be able to gain a bunch of advantage.
Modern Jund
Creatures (10) 3 Scavenging Ooze 4 Tarmogoyf 3 Bloodbraid Elf Spells (15) 2 Thoughtseize 2 Assassin’s Trophy 2 Fatal Push 4 Inquisition of Kozilek 1 Kolaghan’s Command 4 Lightning Bolt Planeswalkers (10) 4 Wrenn and Six 2 Chandra, Acolyte of Flame 4 Liliana of the Veil | Lands (25) 3 Blackcleave Cliffs 2 Swamp 1 Stomping Ground 2 Overgrown Tomb 2 Raging Ravine 1 Forest 3 Bloodstained Mire 3 Verdant Catacombs 1 Blood Crypt 2 Wooded Foothills 2 Barren Moor 1 Mountain 2 Nurturing Peatland Sideboard (15) 2 Collective Brutality 3 Fulminator Mage 2 Surgical Extraction 2 Plague Engineer 2 Nihil Spellbomb 2 Collector Ouphe 2 Anger of the Gods |
Hogaak Reborn
Hogaak Reborn is another take on a Hogaak self-mill deck that plays Hedron Crab to try and fuel up the graveyard alongside Stitcher’s Supplier. It has the same explosiveness with Vengevine and the Gravecrawler plus Carrion Feeder combo. The deck also has some ways to be able to grind with Cryptbreaker to draw cards and pitch dead cards to turn them into a zombie horde is a powerful way to rebuild after a wrath.
Modern Hogaak Reborn
Creatures (37) 4 Hedron Crab 4 Bloodghast 3 Prized Amalgam 4 Carrion Feeder 4 Gravecrawler 4 Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis 4 Insolent Neonate 2 Cryptbreaker 4 Stitcher’s Supplier 4 Vengevine Spells (4) 4 Faithless Looting | Lands (19) 1 Blackcleave Cliffs 1 Gemstone Mine 3 Bloodstained Mire 3 Marsh Flats 3 Verdant Catacombs 1 Swamp 2 Polluted Delta 2 Watery Grave 1 Overgrown Tomb 2 Blood Crypt Sideboard (15) 4 Leyline of the Void 1 Shenanigans 4 Thoughtseize 2 Lightning Axe 4 Nature’s Claim |
Snowshift
Snowshift has been seen taking over MTGO leagues. At its core, it is a Bring to Light Scapeshift deck utilizing snow basics and Ice-Fang Coatl. With Bring to Light Scapeshift you can play a bunch of cool one-of 4CMC spells that you can tutor for with the Bring to Light. The deck is still full of ramp to be able to Turn 4 Scapeshift but it doesn’t rely on Primeval Titan to get the job done.
Modern Snowshift

Stream Team Decklists
Stream Team’s weapons of choice this week are RB Skelemental, Tron, Boros Burn, Izzet Phoenix, and Snowshift. While Tron, Boros Burn, and Izzet Phoenix are popular standbys in the Modern metagame, RB Skelemental is very spicy and Snowshift (as explained above) seems to be the new hotness in the format.
RB Skelemental
The RB Skelemental deck aims to both apply pressure to the opponent’s life total and their hand. Being able to connect with Lightning Skelemental does both of those things, and that feat gets easier with four copies of Unearth, and with four copies of Thunderkin Awakener to buy them back, the deck can give other decks that want to interact fits. Backing things up with Dreadhorde Arcanist and Seasoned Pyromancer to provide tons of extra value, this deck skates a fine line between being aggressive and looking to grind with the best of them!
