Since I live in America I had the day off for a national holiday and managed to jam a few games in the morning and pick up my three wins for the day. So I guess we’re still here doing this. I can’t actually recall the last time I managed to play MTG Arena for three straight days so maybe this is a success for Wizards?
I popped off three more wins with my Azorius draft deck and picked up my 200 experience points. Unfortunately my quest for the day (after refreshing) was to kill 15 of my opponent’s creatures. My Azorius deck didn’t have a single removal spell. So knowing I wasn’t going to crush that quest today I decided to let it slide into tomorrow. I was sitting at 800/1000 mastery experience points to pick up level seven but I decided to let it wait.
Here’s a quick reminder of what we’ve picked up so far, three days into this experiment:
Free Stuff:
- 3 Pack of M20
Premium Stuff (3400 Crystals)
- 1 Pack of M20
- 1,500 Coins
- Chandra Avatar
- Elemental Cat Pet
- Chandra Art Sleeves
- 1 Mastery Orb
Unfortunately today was the last day of Ranked Ravnica Allegiance drafting which meant I had to make some time to play or risk losing potential rewards. Once I was 3-0 with the deck I was hoping to save the next three wins for the following day to pick up my daily XP. However, not knowing if I’d have time in the morning I decided to finish the event before bed and cruised to a 5-3 finish and picked up 650 gems and another pack of RNA.
The 200 xp/day feels bad. There’s no getting around it. If it wasn’t for the fact that my draft event was ending I would have stopped playing Magic for the day once I picked up my wins, knowing I had a solid draft deck, and held off until tomorrow to pick up a few more wins with said deck. I’m sure this won’t be the last time this happens.
I don’t have a solution to this problem yet but I get the impression that I’m going to start just picking up three wins a day, queue up some quests, and then find one day I can try to get them all done. I’m not sure if this is what Wizards was hoping people would do or not. Previously I was just missing out on gold from quests if I didn’t log in for a week. I could still pick up my three packs for the week by getting 15 wins on my own time.
Now I feel like I have to play Magic on Wizards’ time and if I don’t I’m missing out. Sure, the rewards for only reaching level 80 or even 60 are still sweet, but fear of missing out (FOMO) is a real thing and when a game designer uses it to get money out of their players something about the whole transaction feels unethical.
I’m not ready to setup a torch and pitchfork stand but if you know a guy maybe send him my way. We’ll see.
