Season 9 of the Vintage Super League continues next Tuesday at 9 PM Eastern (GMT -5). We’re running a series of articles to celebrate, like our intro to VSL Season 9 and our rundowns of the Top 5 Decks in Vintage and the Top 10 Cards in Vintage. Plus, we’re running a few VSL fantasy leagues on Thousand Leagues!
Week 2 of the Vintage Super League’s ninth season is in the bag, and Randy Buehler made it out as our lone undefeated player so far this season.
Season 9 of VSL is organized into four groups of four players. Group B features Andy Probasco, Brian Coval, Randy Buehler and Stephen Menendian, who played a full round-robin tournament Tuesday night. The competitors brought a variety of decks to the event: Death’s Shadow, Survival Salad, Lavinia Xerox, and Paradoxical Outcome.
Results
So, how did week two go for the players?
R1: Andy Probasco (Death’s Shadow) defeats Brian Coval (Survival Salad) 2-0
R2: Randy Buehler (Lavinia Xerox) defeats Stephen Menendian (Paradoxical Outcome) 2-1
R3: Randy Buehler (Lavinia Xerox) defeats Brian Coval (Survival Salad) 2-1
R4: Stephen Menendian (Paradoxical Outcome) defeats Andy Probasco (Death’s Shadow) 2-0
R5: Randy Buehler (Lavinia Xerox) defeats Andy Probasco (Death’s Shadow) 2-1
R6: Stephen Menendian (Paradoxical Outcome) defeats Brian Coval (Survival Salad) 2-1
Randy Buehler (3-0)
Randy came out guns blazing this week! Lavinia might not have been the best card in the deck, but she showed us how she can strand Moxen and Force of Will in your opponent’s hand, which is nothing to look down on.
Stephen Menendian (2-1)
Paradoxical Outcome did well for Stephen this week and Lavinia seemed decent in helping to protect the combo, but she ultimately didn’t seem necessary. Stephen was able to kill with Blightsteel, Vault/Key, and Mentor throughout the night. The deck is quite the jack-of-all trades.
Andy Probasco (1-2)
Andy wanted to show us how much more powerful Death’s Shadow can be when you get to throw four Mental Misstep into the deck. It seems pretty strong in general (barring some land heavy draws) and I was certainly impressed.
Brian Coval (0-3)
Brian brought his garden (Survival Salad) out for some exciting Vintage action. Had some tough matches, but he got to have some fun discarding Squee to Bazaar and returning Vengevines to play with Hollow One. Unfortunately, his 0-3 start leaves him out of contention for the playoffs.
