Check out our Day 2 recap here.
Day 1 of Pro Tour Guilds of Ravnica in the books, and after eight rounds of Magic, the field is finally starting to shake out. Plenty of well-known pros find themselves at the top of the standings and (thankfully) Standard has proven to be a diverse and interesting format.
The Leaderboard
Jeremy Dezani and Tay Jun Hao were the only undefeated players as Day 1 came to a close. Dezani ended the day in the feature match area for Round 8 against the Brazilian Romolo Disconzi. Dezani, playing Boros Aggro, quickly went down a game against Disconzi’s Mono-Red deck. But Dezani came back to win the match, winning both Games 2 and 3 on the back of Aurelia, Exemplar of Justice—despite forgetting, for the entire match, that Aurelia had Mentor.
A (Relatively) Balanced Metagame
We knew going in that Golgari Midrange would be a popular deck choice, having made up 40% of the metagame at GP Lille two weeks ago. It continued to be the most popular deck at Pro Tour Guilds of Ravnica, with 22% of the players choosing to player Golgari, with Boros, Izzet, and Mono-Red also making up 10% or more of the field.
After Day 1, though, the talk of the tournament were the Red decks featuring Experimental Frenzy. When in the feature match area, time and time again the Red player would chain spell after spell off the top of their deck, virtually drawing two, three, or four cards.
Day 2 of Pro Tour Guilds of Ravnica continues tomorrow at 9AM Eastern on twitch.tv/magic.
