I’ve been playing in the Mud for a long time in Legacy. After running in to one too many Czech Pile decks at Eternal Weekend, and fighting through too many copies of Kolaghan’s Command, I needed a change of pace. Thus I decided to put Mudpost aside for now—though cheers to the beautifully grindy list that did well recently.
I was planning to take this week off from playing Legacy, being on a break with my Locus lands and all, but sometime you just can’t stop the fire. Some friends came over to pick up cards for their decks, and what do you know? Fifteen minutes later, I’m speed-building a deck. I wanted something silly, so a friend handed me a Nic Fit list with Omniscience and Academy Rector. I couldn’t find an Omniscience on the spot, so I improvised a bit. I had a great time, and did fairly well to boot!
For those unfamiliar with Nic Fit, that’s the silly old Legacy name for a Green-Black “Rock” deck based around Veteran Explorer and Cabal Therapy, with powerful board-control permanents like Liliana of the Veil and Pernicious Deed. The deck uses Veteran Explorer and a handful of sacrifice outlets to ramp very quickly. As a result, it gets to play some fun midrange creatures like Siege Rhino, Sigarda, Host of Herons, and Titania, Protector of Argoth. This is a strategy I can get behind!
Nic Fit is a fun toolbox deck, perfect for people who like to personalize their decklist without needing to brew up a new archetype. Below you’ll find the improvised list I played this week—in the spirit of Trade Binder Old School from Eternal Weekend.
Emergency Nic Fit
You’ll notice it’s a pretty unique list, owing partly to the haste with which it was assembled. My inspiration was this list that a friend found online. While I had fun running this version through Legacy night, I have a lot of changes I want to make.
Cuts number one, two, and three are Birthing Pod. A friend suggested it as something that might work given the circumstances. If I had spent more than fifteen minutes building the deck, I would have realized how awful the card is with this creature suite.
I really enjoyed Academy Rector, but it could use a more robust enchantment package, shall we say. It’s tempting to try the Omniscience package, but I don’t think the time is right for that. Instead I ran with Eldrazi Conscription to make my beater a bit stronger, Recurring Nightmare to grind folks out, and Overwhelming Splendor to go over the top with a quickness.
Here’s where I want to go with the deck in the future:
NicFit of the Future
I’ve been seeing a lot more Nic Fit decks in the Legacy metagame since the miracles ban. I recently saw someone playing a superfriends-esque Nic Fit deck at my LGS that was pretty impressive, and there’s more out there having success. The archetype has had success in the past, and it may prove to be well-positioned.
It might not be perfect, but I think it’s fun with some potential. Turn two Siege Rhino is a thing I have done with this deck, and it feels good. I’ve even managed to play a decent game after mullinganing to three cards! I might be camping with the veterans for a little while longer.
Besides, you need a place to play that sweet new-art Garruk Relentless, right?
