This summer Channel Fireball is hosting Grand Prix Las Vegas, featuring Legacy, Limited and Modern. It starts Thursday and goes through Sunday and looks like it is going to be as big and flashy as Las Vegas itself. The best part of this tournament is you can play Legacy and Modern without having any overlap. I know plenty of people who plan on showing up for the Modern grand prix but don’t have a deck for the Legacy portion. A few weeks ago I wrote about how to curate a Legacy community and provided an affordable variant of Cloudpost for those looking to get into the format.
This week I am going to put my money where my mouth is and announce our newest column, Legacy Hero, a follow-up to the much loved Modern Hero. In Modern Hero our own Rich Stein took the Modern Event deck and piloted it for a few months leading up to Grand Prix Worcester in August 2014. My goal is to do something similar for Legacy. I know there is no Legacy equivalent to the Modern Event deck so I am just going to put together a budget deck and pilot it.
My goal is to help other people get into Legacy or at least have something fun to pilot at GP Vegas. People seem to forget that you don’t need a $3,000 deck to have fun or to do well in Legacy. So until Tuesday night at midnight (Eastern Time) I’m going to let people vote on a few things to get me started.
The first is budget. I already own a lot of these decks so I don’t want to force a budget on anyone. I won’t use impossible-to-find cards just because I happen to have access to some of them. Here’s where you come in: I want help deciding my initial and my monthly budgets. The initial budget will be used to build the starting deck. The monthly budget will be used to make improvements each month.
Each week I’ll test the deck locally and use my monthly budget to make improvements. Any winnings will go into the improvement budget, but we won’t budget for the entry fees because those could vary wildly based on your local store. Either way, fill out the polls below to help determine the budget for Legacy Hero!
The next part you get to help decide is what deck I will be playing. I’m not going to let anyone decide the exact 75 I’ll be playing, but instead I’ll let you guys help me pick the archetype. I will be playing every week between now and Las Vegas and SCG Worcester will be my big test/midway point to see how the deck is doing and retool it.
