Aether Revolt has arrived! And with it comes an answer to all of the overpowered bears that were printed this summer. That answer comes in the form of Fatal Push. For those of you who missed it, Fatal Push is an instant for one black that destroys a creature with converted mana cost two or less. But if you have revolt turned one, say because you sacrificed a fetchland, it kills a creature with converted mana cost four or less.
This is crazy, that means you could fetch a land or Wasteland your opponent to turn on revolt. You could even tap Sensei’s Divining Top to turn on revolt. In Legacy that is overpowered. More importantly it’s a one-mana removal spell that does not give your opponent life (Swords to Plowshares). Fatal Push doesn’t really have any crazy drawbacks and I expect to see a lot of decks jamming four copies.
As a Post player this doesn’t really make me nervous, since my creatures all have converted mana costs well above four. But outside of giant creatures that get cheated into play or ramped out early, every creature in every Legacy deck dies to Fatal Push. I guess there’s Tasigur, the Golden Fang. Fatal Push makes black decks much better. It will definitely change the Legacy metagame.
As a Legacy player I’m also happy to see what they chose for the Aether Revolt Masterpiece inventions. With Engineered Explosives retailing at $60, any type of reprint is welcome in my mind. Other great Legacy staples reprinted in Aether Revolt as inventions include Ensnaring Bridge, Defense Grid, Trinisphere, and Chalice of the Void. Almost all of the twenty new inventions are good Legacy or Vintage cards. It’s pretty impressive, actually, and I’m excited to see what we get in Amonkhet and beyond.
Lastly, I know I posted that this week I would follow up on last week’s article about budget Legacy. Don’t worry it has not been forgotten! I’m actually in the process of putting together a big project that I’m hoping to announce next week. So keep an eye out!
