Ahhhh the joys of spoiler season, a Magic player’s favorite time of year. For me it’s a time of Standard temptations and Legacy dreams. I know this set isn’t entirely spoiled yet but I’m not good at being patient so I’m going to share my thoughts on a few of my favorite cards from this set like I did last set. I didn’t get a chance this week to contribute to the group post so here are my own thoughts.

Eternal Scourge: You may cast Eternal Scourge from Exile. Whenever it becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls, exile it.
It feels like good sideboard tech for Mud against decks like Death and Taxes. As a Mud player I sometimes struggle with finally getting a creature out to only get it exiled. This card definitely solves that problem. It’s only a 3/3 but to be able to get it out quick and be able to keep getting it back out is a huge positive for me.
Lupine Prototype seems really fun to me in a deck like Pox. You can cast it pretty early on and eat your opponents hand to be able to attack them for 5 for only two mana. Seems good to me. It also plays well with fast-mana colorless decks like Modern Affinity or Vintage Shops that dump their hand early.
People are already suggesting fun crazy combos with Eldritch Evolution. I think it has some fun Birthing Podesque potential. It might not be format breaking but I really want to find a way to have fun with this.
Grapple with the Past: I can think of plenty of decks that would like this. For Lands it’s like an instant speed baby Life from the Loam. I’m a big fan of Loam decks so I hope someone finds a way to have fun with this.
Well, Cat! I mean that’s 90%. I also want to see some shenanigans with it in Standard. Mostly Cat though.
Soul Separator: The flavor on this card is unreal. I also wouldn’t mind running it in Mud. It’s a great way to recur creatures for me and it’s spicy. Plus most of my creatures cost 8 mana or more so I really don’t mind the cost on this. This card might suck but I’m determined to try to have fun with it.
Trisadekaphobia. That is all. Don’t let me down standard.
Brisela: I know this isn’t the most reasonable thing to want but I’ve never pretended to be reasonable. I am a Mud player! Gisela and Bruna on their own are great cards, I think they’re so much fun. I want to find a way to make Brisela a I thing because she’s amazing.
I think there is actually a law requiting me to like this card. My Mud deck runs tribal, sorcery, artifact, creature and planeswalker which mean Emrakul has the potential to cost me 8 mana, to take my opponents turn and be REALLY hard for them to remove. People are kind of shitting on her but she definitely has some major potential.
I’m looking through my choices and starting to question myself as a sane person. Then again I am a Legacy player, so I’m probably not that sane after all. So now I just need to sit back and wait for the Liliana spoiler.
Kate hails from Worcester MA and also does a bit of Card Altering. Check her Stuff out on Facebook! She mainly plays legacy and modern though will occasionally find herself playing EDH. She has recently succumbed to MTGO.
