The new season of Team Draft League is upon us and with it an ton of excitement. The Lucky Chumps didn’t make it into the previous season’s playoffs, which meant that I wouldn’t be a captain this time around. This turned out to be a blessing since Dan OMS had the #1 overall pick for this season’s draft and he chose yours truly as the Pack 1, Pick 1. Since Chris Manning is a captain this season there was no chance that we would get the old band back together either (not that Dan would have been able to wheel him anyway). Instead we got a surprising last pick with Dylan Heister. Dylan was a previous TDL champion so getting him last was crazy value for us.
With our team set, the next task was finding a name. This, in my opinion, is the hardest part of the entire league. Pick a boring name and the peanut gallery (Matt Jones) will mock you, pick too clever of a name and it will go over their (Jones’s) head. I decided to sit back and let DOMS and Dylan do all of the leg work. DOMS really wanted to have some kind of Longo pun in the name though (who can blame him, it is a pretty awesome name) so Dylan and him started to focus on that.
Their first iterations were all good, but nothing was screaming at us. Some of my favorites were: Staff of DOMSinance, Longoshot Squad, Golgari Longolegs and Dojanas Brothers. Saying Dojonas Brothers out loud still gives me a little chuckle. I liked all of these, but they didn’t really highlight our team’s core values. From the team name you should be able to figure out what their interests are, who they be with, what things make them smile, etc. Obviously more work needed to be done.
A week passed by and we still didn’t have anything. The deadline for our names was only a day away and we needed something or else are name was created by a committee. We made a team decision to brainstorm our ideas over food. After all, it’s not a good idea to make any important decision on an empty stomach. After our lunch of t-bone steak, cheese eggs, and Welch’s grape, we had a breakthrough. The name was perfect—and without further ado I present you with:
Andrew Longo has been playing Magic: The Gathering at a mediocre level since 1994. He managed to get lucky on the backs of his teammates to win Grand Prix Providence. When not playing Magic he runs a D&D campaign, plays video games, and reads comics (a real triple threat for the ladies).
