Part One: Once You Paup’ the Fun Don’t Staup

It has been a very magical past two weeks for me. Yes, they would’ve been just as magical had I spent them in Disneyworld but instead I spent a significant of my time at adult-nerd Disneyworld (i.e. any Grand Prix, or in this case, Grand Prix Dulle…I mean Washington D.C.). But before I get into all of that Bohemian Rhapsody, I would like to begin by thanking Zach Barash (pictured below), the columnist of Drawing Live for his Standard Pauper tournament which I was able to emerge victorious from!

dbp

I will spare you most of the recapping and details since he did an excellent job of providing both in his article. Thanks again Zach and I am looking forward to the upcoming Standard Silverblack tournament (that sounds way cooler than “proletariat” lets be honest).

It is certainly a nice feeling to win back the Taiga that Zach himself won from me two years ago. Life is really funny sometimes, like when Matt Jones is in it. But sometimes it’s not funny; like when Matt Jones is in it.  Here are two screenshots of the decks I used for the tournament, both in the swiss portion (monoblue fliers) in the Top 8 (Aurastow).  Click to enhance.

This concludes Part I of Draftasaurus Rex’s “Three-for-one”. Please stay tuned for “Part II: Magic, The Grand Prixening.”

Part II: Magic, The Grand Prixening

I am a Limited player…both in my adeptness at playing Limited formats and at my limited (or lack thereof) interest in playing most Constructed formats. Last weekend was Grand Prix DC and although the format was legace (a better way of saying “legacy” just to be clear here), I had a fair amount of incentive to go. First of all, my best friend and introductour (I have decided that this is a word because it describes perfectly what I am trying to describe) to the game of magic, Jim Orr (“Day Two-er of Worlds…err GP’s”) was going to be in attendance. Jim is a stone cold day-two master. At the same time, I have also seen Jim attempt to eat a tree while hiking through Narnia:

mmmmm, confiers

mmm, conifers.

So needless to say Jim once again day two’d as the capable RUG Delver pilot he is. Meanwhile, I spent my time playing in two separate Sealed events. Saturday I finished 14th in the “Win-a-Trip-to-PAX-East” Sealed tournament and Sunday dropped at x-2 from my event so my car could make it back to New York at a reasonable hour. I would describe both decks as mediocre (with my Saturday pool being slightly better). The more I play Sealed the more I really do feel it is much more of a crap shoot when compared to draft. That is not to say that a high amount of skill is not involved as it certainly is but I do feel that overall sealed is the weaker of the two limited formats. As Jim puts it, I really need to day two a limited GP so I can let out my inner drafting animal. Sadly I will not be going to Toronto this month, which is yet another reason I decided to attend DC.  I had a great trip overall, loved hanging out with some dudes, playing mostly reasonable opponents, and even managing to find some Korean BBQ. I also got to sleep in the same bed as Alex Owen wearing his CPAP machine two nights in a row for whatever that’s worth. How could you not get lost in those baby blues?

Next up, the mediocr…errrr…exciting conclusion!

Part III: The EXCITING Conclusion!

Now what would a Draftasaurus Rex article be without a draft recap!? Well, actually, it would be a pretty standard Draftasaurus article from like the past month. But hey, shut up, fuck you! Let’s do this!

So last Monday at Twenty Sided Store I drafted my favorite draft format (Modern Masters) and essentially opened the nuts in my first pick of every pack (first picks from packs one, two, three from left to right):

faeries

Three (okay really only one) bomb, three Spellstutter Sprites, three Theiving Spirtes and $100 in rares later, lets just say that my deck wasn’t exactly faer (man, I’ve been waiting to use that one). Though to be honest, as good as I knew my deck to be, all of my games were really close and I still had to really play well to earn my wins which is truly a testament to how awesome this format is and how well my opponents played. My round two buddy Jon had a Meloku; a faeries decks worst nightmare. Just imagine if I’d lost to this guy in round two.  Dude looks like he uses two mouse pads instead of a playmat amirite?

This man Anax and Cymeded the shit out of me last team draft.

This man Anax and Cymede’d the shit out of me last team draft. Double mouse pads for sure.

And now onto an MMA draft I did a few months back!

Pack 1 pick 1:

Overall a pretty weak pack I’d say. I think Blinkmoth Nexus is a defensible first pick here as a free spell is a free spell, even if you’re not in affinity. If you do end up in affinity, it’s obviously quite good, but I decided to go with the best spell in the pack and take Blightspeaker as I really like BW rebels and think it’s one of the stronger archetypes.

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 2:

Yeahhh, if you could go ahead and pass me one of the top five rares in the set that’d be greeeaaaaat.

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 3:

Dreamspoiler Witches is the best card in the pack, it’s in our colors, but certainly not at it’s best if we end up in rebels. If we end up in faeries with a lot of flash creatures, it’s at it’s best. If we end up not playing black at all, it’s at it’s worst. Either way, it’s at something isn’t it?

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 4:

So I did this draft a while ago and as I look back now I would really consider taking the Aether Spellbomb here and might do so if this draft happened again. I’m not married to rebels and Saltfield Recluse is almost sure to table but I took Blinding Beam figuring that if I did end up in BW rebels, the beam would be harder to comeby than more Recluses. It also is of course, a card to trigger my Dreamspoiler Witches should I play them.

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 5:

Vivid lands are great but as many of you hopefully know at this point, I detest playing more than two colors, and will rarely (if ever) do it off of even free splashes. With that said, Amrou Seekers is pretty strong (though not as good as Pestermite) but I haven’t seen much good blue up to this point and with white flowing and another rebel in the pack, I felt comfortable to begin moving in (not with Matt Jones).

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 6:

A good sign, though this pack is still pretty deep.

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 7:

I think at this point it’s pretty clear that we want to be in some sort of white beatdown deck though another Dreamspoiler is tempting it’s a bit harder to get them to work.

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 8:

Come on people, do you not realize how good this card is?  Though again this pack is still pretty strong overall.

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 9:

Happy to pick this up here.  This card is deceptively strong in this format.

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 10:

Sideboard fodder.

Pack 1 pick 15:

Not sure if I’m even playing this but…

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 1:

Yuck, passing Tromp the Domains.  It might be correct to hate that card a lot of the time since it’s just so tough for most decks in this format to beat. I really don’t like green at all in this format except for that card but Bound in Silence is just too good to pass up and there is no way I would have a shot at tabling it since this pack is not very deep.

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 2:

Certainly a welcomed addition to a deck with little creatures.  One of the stronger commons for a deck like mine.

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 3:

I’ll be honest, I have no idea what I was thinking here. I mean it’s not like there’s anything that’s good for me here so I guess I figured I’d hate a card that “might” 2-for-1 me but honestly I probably should’ve just taken Feudkiller’s Verdict even though I probably wouldn’t have played it.

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 4:

Hmmm, things are taking a bit of a downturn. We should be seeing a decent amount of white cards considering we cut it pretty strongly in pack one, but sometimes people don’t read or know how to read signals, open bombs and move in to new colors, or sometimes the cards just aren’t in the packs in general. Warren Pilferers is actually pretty strong in this format, especially the better the creatures in your deck are, unfortunately however, the creatures in my deck are not particularly worth getting back save for the Vampire, who is hard enough to kill as is.

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 5:

That’s more like it.  Though now with so many targets I am eager to pick up more rebel serachers as I still only have the Blightspeaker from pack one.

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 6:

Pretty much purely a hate card here.  I’m not gonna play two Pilferers and hopeuflly not even one.  I probably should’ve just hated echoing Truth though since my deck probably cares more about that card.

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 7:

Gleam is okay in rebel decks both as an extra way to draw mana but also as a way to get in those last few points of damage with evasive guys or Blightspeakers.

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 8:

This is a late gift.  This card is very strong.

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 9:

Two beams are fine though I wouldn’t play a third and I would prefer to only play one.

Pack 3 pick 1:

It’s nothing exciting but it’s exactly the card I need right now.

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 2:

So I could bank on the Sculler tabling which is pretty reasonable given it’s colors and this pack and I could just hate the Thundercloud Shaman which would be extremely tough to beat but I generally tend to hedge and I’d rather take what’s best for my deck first than hate a card I have a small percentage chance to play against.

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 3:

Another weak pack but not a problem for us since it has exactly what we need.

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 4:

Again nothing too fancy here but just another solid addition.

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 5:

The rebel contingent continues to grow stronger.

Pack 3 pick 7:

I don’t know what I was thinking at all when I saw this pack. I mean a second Bonesplitter is nice and all but e-cap is e-cap. Even if you can’t recurr it it’s still super strong in this format and I’d probably take it now in hindsight.

I don’t remember my final build since this draft was quite some time ago but it certainly is interesting to see how some of my evaluations have changed in that time frame. I hope you enjoyed todays article and I sincerely hope to see you playing in the next Hipster’s of the Coast Standard Silverblack tournament! Thanks for reading!
