That’s the big, glaring question for me this week. Do I dive into Modern, or do I just stay in the Standard pool? It’s an interesting time for me. I didn’t update my deck after M14 came out, so when I run my standard deck I’m running aggro in a totally different format. And with these Theros leaks coming out, this is going to change everything in such a huge way that the question I have to ask myself is: what’s the deck I want to play?
I guess the answer to that, in short, is Red Green Aggro.
So what are some staple cards that I need in my deck? This is a question to the world again. I once asked you to help me build a mono-green deck. I now ask for a much less-insane request. I Modern playable deck. Today, I’ll talk about creatures I’m considering.
Experiment One seems like an incredibly useful guy to have on my field. He’s so versatile, he comes back, he’s usually a 3/3 for one. Sounds good.
Ghor-Clan Rampager is so powerful as a spell, and if I’m twiddling my thumbs turn six or seven, he’s great to drop as a big dude.
Goblin Guide seems like a no brainer. It’s so viciously fast, it seems useful whenever, it pumps an un-pumped Experiment One. He shows me the top card of your deck. I like him.
Kird Ape is such a rad dude. I like that he’s cheap, too. (Money cheap, not mana cheap… which he also is).
Scavenging Ooze seems like a dream in this deck. He’s right on curve, he eats my discarded Ghor-Clan Rampager, he’s a real team player, right?
Flinthoof Boar is so aggressive. I love him. He’s such a bully.
Burning-Tree Emissary is really a no brainer in this deck. Acceleration is acceleration is acceleration. This is a good card, and it fits well in here.
So now I beg the question… who else? If I am going to go modern, than the only cards I don’t have from here are Kird Ape’s and Goblin Guide’s. Easy enough to pick up. I haven’t really thought about spells yet, do I go burn burn burn? Do I go Act of Aggression (probably yes)? Grim Lavamancer? I like this deck because I already know how this deck works, I’ve played a slower version of it for four months in standard. I love how it plays, but I don’t know what to expect. I think using this deck as a blank template will be a huge boon to me. This is the deck I can use to see what everyone else plays, what to expect, what cards to fear. This could be my modern deck. I just need to figure it out.
Final question: Fetches? I guess so, but really? I want a Misty Rainforest just to fetch for a green land?
Help me out, crew. Help a scrubby out. It’s been a while since I’ve constructed a deck, and I’m excited to get back into the game. So please, suggestions, deck lists you like, funny anecdotes, anything! Well, almost anything, be nice.
Hopefully some day I’ll be able to get into Modern so much I can quote Jonathan Richman, “I’m in love with the Modern world, yeah.”
